Autumn’s Hum

Bee Tree by P. D. Laine

“Listen! The wind is rising, and the air is wild with leaves,

We have had our summer evenings, now for October eves!”

― Humbert Wolfe

Autumn’s color now magnified by the melodic hum
of nesting birds and honeybees preparing their winter homes.

And when exquisite graceful leaves fall and come drifting down
painting a canvas of brilliant hues upon the cooling ground,

The beetles and slithering worms get busy, doing their life’s work
Breaking down the rotting leaves, returning them to Mother Earth
as we watch in awe the miraculous circle of life, death, and rebirth.

Rite of Passage

“Why did the grove undress itself only to wait for the snow?”- Pablo Neruda

They stand in a row limbs naked and exposed, ready to face the biting cold,
but I ponder why they chose this time of year to bare their soul?

Is it a rite of passage for a grove of trees to do a strip tease
as warriors did eons ago, withstanding cold snow to prove virility?

Or do they grow restless dressed in a lush tapestry of leaves with no place to go?

Quivering blush pink sky
kissing daylight good-bye

Bidding desert summer farewell
casting a colorful magical spell

Welcoming brisk autumn evenings
sitting by a roaring fire dreaming

Of summers gone, winters to come
old lovers lost, faithful hearts won
all while watching the setting sun
