His mind’s all black thickets and blood.” – Jim Harrison
In the deep heart of the dense forest
amidst captive shafts of untouched light
here is where bramble berries flourish
while the land surrenders without a fight.
The briers at their harshest center
are protected by thorny daggers
drawing blood from the tender skin
of unsuspecting wanderers.
And there amongst the thorny thickets,
lies the carcass of a gray-brown kit
than tufts of fur and bleached bones
for once it heard the death knell song
its soul gave up and met its doom.
But there is an essential truth
in the death of the trapped bunny
we live, we love, we cry, we die
and in the end, we are alone
while the rest of the world moves on.

incuding you, four of us did rabbits for this prompt – these lines are so memorable
“here is where bramble berries flourish
while the land surrenders without a fight.”

This is beautiful–maybe my favorite of yours.
So many poems about rabbits. I must have missed that memo. Hahaha.

Haha- I know wasn’t that weird? I purposely didn’t read any prior. I try to find my own voice first, but it’s amazing many of us had rabbits.

I also don’t read any until I’ve written mine. It’s funny. 🙂

It’s very odd how rabbits seem to have stolen this prompt, which ostensibly has nothing whatsoever to do with rabbits. This is so achingly sad.

Yes, I know isn’t it? Thank you Jane. There’s sadness in the air today.

Jilly being out of it doesn’t help either.

The rabbit’s demise is so poignant….as we move on. Eloquently penned (and lol! on the recurring rabbit theme 🙂 )
