Mind Trap

“There is a human wildness held beneath the skin that finds all barriers brutishly
unbearable.”– Jim Harrison
A mind once caught in a cage of propriety and decorum
now released from the elusive trap of society’s expectations.
When we’re captive we don’t see the spectral prison bars
but each exhausting day passing within their shadows
bears invisible scars of a shackled mind
no longer happy and free.
But once the taste of freedom drips onto
we seldom deny the copious yearning,
and must answer to its lyrical song.
When our mind is free from other’s expectations
the bars once so confining, now fading away
with clarity we realize the oppressive cage created
was of our own divisive making.

This is so true, and you say it so well. It’s hard to hold on to as an idea, though, isn’t it? The cage is so real, it’s hard to remember that we made it ourselves. Some particularly great lines for me were:
But once the taste of freedom drips onto
our dry thirsty tongues
and
When we’re captive we don’t see the spectral prison bars
