Slipping

The scent of earth after a gentle rain
Memories washed in shades of autumn’s gold
Tempers the black grief, relieves the harsh pain
Seasons changing leaves once brilliant yet cold

Painting hushed shadows as evening’s sun falls
Soft chittering of birds high in the trees
A torn heart recalls the last plaintive call
Now slipping from life a pained soul is free
