Pale Moon Sighed

“Migration”  Painting by Eddie Schrieffer

Pale moon sighed when Monarchs came
fluttering in on a weightless breeze
with delicate wings tattered and torn
from their arduous journey.

And though their lifespan short
these winged ones came to offer hope
A continuum of life and certain death
washed in shades of autumn’s blush
of crimson, gamboge, and russet.

As their wings unfurled, scattered memories
entrenched in their fragile gossamer
Ancient paths of migration emerged
carrying on their sacred lineage.

  1. “their ancient lineage” and “bringing hope” …. such lovely thoughts. I love your interpretation!

  2. My mother comes to visit in the form of a yellow butterfly, always yellow. And as a result, this line in your poem stood out for me … ‘as their wings unfurled, scattered memories.’ Thank you.
