The Naked Bones

“It was Salvador Dalí who said the red wine of Cadaqués has the bitter taste of tears.”
― Clifford Thurlow, Sex, Surrealism, Dali And Me

Shadows undulate on cloistered walls,
phantoms unveiled in sultry candlelight
as the wax drips down another empty vessel
it leaves a milky puddle where she recalls
a naive soul once shiny bright
now a baked tundra each night

So she sits and drinks alone
for red wine is her only companion
a makeshift partner for when nights are cold
and though the wine with all its warmth leaves her exposed
and memories inhabit this room, now her lonesome home
as she ponders and gnaws on bleached naked bones

  2. Ah. Been there, done that, got the tee shirt, albeit many years ago. This poem reminds me of Neil Diamond’s song Red Red Wine, though his is simple, yours poetic. It’s a tough space to be in, but sometimes the ability to cope is outrun by the ability to feel pain and there it is. This suits the List source material “Ghost Eaters” more closely than you might imagine. So nice to see you on the linky! Late, shmate, we never close. 😉

  3. This is incredibly deep and poignant, Linda! I resonate with; “a makeshift partner for when nights are cold.” 💜💜

  4. I am absolutely smitten with these words: “memories inhabit this room”… I’m just sitting here mulling over those words. They are so potent.
Loved the poem….and most especially those four words!
