Author’s Note: Yesterday, we visited OdySea in the Desert, an aquarium attraction Scottsdale AZ. It was spectacular. These moon jellyfish were some of my favorites.

From My Window

In the room where I write each day, I watch the world go by
through this plate glass window, I’ve seen some magnificent sights

A Cooper’s hawk comes visiting hunting easy prey,
for the feeders are always laden with a smorgasbord everyday

I hear the muffled chatter of the chartreuse and peach lovebirds
as they scramble for a place among the rest of the bird herd

Ruby throated hummingbirds flit from feeder to limb to sky,
their iridescent feathers shimmering as they soar high

The mourning doves are fat and plump, the pigeons are obese
they scramble over the ground snatching up fallen seed

Woodpeckers come pecking at the tree finding bugs to eat,
and plunging their beaks in the suet, a welcome winter treat

Goldfinches cling to the thistle sock swinging in the breeze,
filling their tiny bellies with the Nyjer seed

From time to time, a ground dove hops on the windowsill,
peering through the window, tapping with its long bill

Cocking its head from eye to eye, giving me a wise look
as if to say still writing I see, why not write a whole book!

The Essence of Decay

The bloom of youth in the rain washed rose is a joy for eyes to see

yet what lies underneath this glow is invisible to you and me.

Blind are we for a fresh budding rose is already fading, dying

time is cruel the blossom will wilt, the light will wither away,

one day bursting with life, then naught but a thorny stalk.

And in the wake of perfumed petals drifting on the heavy air

all that remains and is unseen is their decaying essence.

Dark Solitude

I am alone with my thoughts on the morning walk. Going through the motions, pausing when Bubba stops to smell the scent of a dog that’s found the bush before him. My mind, like the sky, is wallowing in darkness.

My precious dog is still here but I know the day will come when he’ll be gone. When I try to imagine that moment, my heart catches and my throat closes. This much I know, it will be much worse than my thoughts can ever conceive today.

I pull myself into the present; the solitude will come all too soon for the years are racing by. I look up to the heavens and say a prayer. Lord, help me to live in the now, to cherish every morning walk, every old dog snore, every plea for treats.
