#Haibun: Introspection

Piet Mondrian, ‘Broadway Boogie Woogie, 1942-43, moma.org

There is more than one path to a soul’s door. Sometimes the door opens inward, and we search within ourselves to find the keys to life. Others open outward where we seek our answers from God, nature, a blue moon, the hot sun, or an unusual encounter. Whatever path we choose, they always lead us home to who we are and who were and who we will become.

Things That Die Alone

Alone-

Whales beached on a sandy shore
Sea turtles caught in nets, no way to escape
Polar bears starving, wasting away
Rodents imploding from fatal poison
Hawks and owls doomed for ingesting them
Dandelions withering from chemical herbicides
Honeybees dying from lethal insecticides
Earth tainted from leaching pesticides
Humanity amidst Corona’s genocide
We are committing suicide, suicide, suicide
With this surge of our self- centered rising tide
Our souls rotting from the inside

-Alone

#American Sentence Sunday: Grackles

Morning Walk
Mesa, AZ

“Cool morning breeze whispering through the palms as a grackle feeds its young”

Author’s Note: Yesterday in my garden, I watched a grackle feeding three fledglings. They were all gathered on the ground in a circle and putting up quite a fuss as to who should get fed first! I was so caught up in their antics, I didn’t get a photo.

The Enemy Revealed

the veil, now lifted
the enemy is revealed
spending life racing
chasing the mighty dollar
failing to honor nature

but now that we’ve paused
we are seeing fresh beauty
in every green leaf
finally, we realize
earth was waiting for our fall

for we are, you see
our own baffling enemy
destroying the air
we breathe, the water we drink
killing ourselves with each act

Author’s Note: When I saw this photo, I saw so much more than a crocodile, a predator. I saw all of nature, watching us as we destroy this beautiful earth. And now, we are paying the price with this disease. This earth and its creatures will be here long after we are gone.

Love Lies Bleeding

Bella: This was taken Day 2
Mesa, AZ

Love lies bleeding from my eyes

As hot tears fall upon downy feathers

I hold you close to my beating heart

This hollow body light as air

Your magnificent soul no longer there

And though my whole being aches

With the pain you must have felt

I know you are at peace

Flying somewhere high

Chasing vibrant rainbows

In the vast turquoise sky

Author’s Note: For those of you new to my site, Bella was a Great Horned Owl who had been coming to my yard for 6 days. There are several posts about her visits. Yesterday, I found her lying face down with her wings spread. I am devastated over her death, but at the same time honored she chose to honor me with her presence.
