I stare in silence, not uttering a word
While rain drops fall with my every breath
I become the melody of the sandpiper bird
But for me there is no sweeter song sung
And a peaceful sigh escapes from my lips
As I savor the lilting music upon my tongue
I taste briny salt, blue sky, the choppy bay
I hear shore waves with their hypnotic sound
And feel soft rain falling as it guides my way

Looking back, I don’t know why I was surprised every time love started or ended, because all things beautiful never last.
There were the years when he wrapped his arms around my heart to keep me safe from the world but now, it’s all gone. What’s left are the memories of strength and a whisper of warm breath on my cheek.
We had no idea the end was coming, or that our time together was growing shorter with each passing day. If either of us would be the one to go first I always thought it would be me.
The universe works in mysterious ways I’ll never fathom. There are times it leaves the weak and broken. It is not always a question of survival of the fittest but survival due to ability, for who should remain to tell the story but a poet?

From here in the fragrant rustling sage grass
I watch the night beetles race for the full bellied moon
But they will never get there I know for their efforts are futile
Watching their wings spread from heavy mahogany bodies,
It’s a wonder they glide so high for they are heavy and cumbersome
Dressed for battle as they are in their hard shell of protective armor
But like I, these warriors are drawn to the white stone moon
But alas both of us for very different reasons
Beetles are in love with the silvery gleaming light and I–
Adore the March Hare living up there and wish I was there too

“Fear is the mind-killer.” ― Frank Herbert , Dune
Standing in line at the grocery store:
A woman in front of me buying 30 lbs of apples
20 lbs of onions and 2 dozen donuts- why?
All I can surmise is the apples are for horses she owns,
But as far as the onions and donuts, I will never know
A young guy behind me, single for sure-
with a cart full of dried pasta, jarred sauce
frozen meals, and one lonely container of chicken broth
A cashier working through a long line tells someone
We have a limit on the number of rolls of toilet paper
and hand sanitizer you can buy
There is a look of panic in everyone’s eyes
And the world has suddenly become much smaller.
I put my paltry 6 items on the counter,
and wait my turn
Then I go home
sit and watch a Northern Flicker
bask in the warmth of the morning sun.
